Villa Mondragone is an awesome XVI sec. mansion, built upon a hill with a stunning panoramic view on the city of Rome.

It is one of the Ville Tuscolane, a group of mansions scattered around an area encompassing the territories of Frascati and Monte Porzio Catone. The Villa complex includes 18 hectares of parkland surrounding the imposing Villa, a building with a surface of about 80.000sqm.

The history of the Villa is marked from the very beginning by an alternation of Cardinal owners which culminated with Cardinal Ugo Boncompagni, the future Pope Gregory XIII. It was actually Pope Gregory XIII who suggested to build a new, grandiose Villa on the knoll above Villa Tuscolana, using as foundations the remains of the ancient Roman Villa dei Quintili (Roman Consuls in 151 d.C.). The Villa was designed by the architect Martino Longhi. The name Mondragone refers to the dragon which is represented on the coat of arms of the Boncompagni family and that is depicted in various parts of the Villa and the gardens. More at:

How to reach Villa Mondragone:

From Roma Termini train station:

Get the underground line A toward Anagnina. From the Anagnina bus station get the COTRAL bus toward Rocca Priora "via Monte Porzio Catone" and get off at the "Hotel Villa Vecchia" stopover. It is recommended to ask the driver because stops are under request.

By car or taxi:

From the A1 Milan-Naples highway or from A24 Rome-L'Aquila/Pescara highway: follow the indications toward

"Roma sud", Monte Porzio Catone exit. From the highway exit turn right and go through "Via Fontana Candida" street until the roundabout. Once in the roundabout follow the indications toward Monte Porzio Catone and then, at the second roundabout turn left in "Via Frascati". Villa Mondragone is located at "Via Frascati 51".

From Rome city centre:

Get "Grande Raccordo Anulare" street (GRA) toward the A1 Milan-Naples highway. Take the highway toward Monte Porzio Catone and follow the instructions above on how to reach by car.

From Fiumicino Airport "Leonardo da Vinci" (FCO):

Direct train (Leonardo Express):
Quick train for Roma Termini train station, departures every 30 minutes, then continue following the "From Roma Termini train station" instructions stated above.

Metropolitan train (FM1 line) + Underground:
Metropolitan train of FM1 line toward Roma Tiburtina train station, departures every 15 minutes from Monday to Saturday, every 30 minutes on sunday. Get off at Roma Tuscolana train station and follow the underground/bus instructions stated above.

From Ciampino Airport (CIA):

COTRAL bus for Anagnina bus terminal, then follow the instructions from Anagnina toward Rocca Priora above.
